Start with the work your platform must do
Software comparisons become much easier when you define the job before studying the tools. A platform that is excellent for a cohort-based course can be unnecessarily complex for a small download library—and a simple storefront may become restrictive when community and learner progress matter.
Your best platform is not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one that supports your current offer without blocking the next sensible stage.
The seven-question fit check
1. What are you selling first?
Write down the first offer in one sentence: a self-paced course, live programme, membership, coaching package, template library or another digital product. Avoid designing for five hypothetical businesses at once.
2. How should customers learn or consume?
Decide whether you need lessons, progress tracking, quizzes, certificates, scheduled release, live sessions, community discussion or simply secure file delivery.
3. How will people pay?
Map the required currencies, one-off payments, subscriptions, payment plans, trials, taxes and refund process. Then verify which parts the platform handles and which depend on a payment processor or external service.
4. What must connect?
List the tools you already rely on—email, website, analytics, customer support, automation and accounting. Mark each connection as essential, useful or optional.
5. Who will run it?
Account for the weekly administration: enrolments, learner questions, content changes, failed payments, reporting and access control. A cheaper platform is not cheaper if it creates hours of manual work.
6. What is the real operating cost?
Compare the subscription with transaction charges, payment fees, email tools, community software, integrations and specialist help. Use your expected first-year volume rather than an unrealistic best case.
7. How difficult would it be to leave?
Check how you can export customers, content, orders, progress and community data. Understand domain control and what customers experience during a future migration.
Build a three-platform shortlist
Choose one specialist course platform, one broader all-in-one system and one simpler or modular alternative. Test the same real workflow in each: publish a small lesson, create an offer, complete a test purchase, send the required follow-up and export available data.
